Fenian Raid into Canada [I Love History]

This image depicts, inaccurately, one of the occasions when Fenians from the USA tried to invade Canada. The incursions were short lived and unsuccessful, with the Canadian militia usually on hand to shepherd them back over the border. This was about 1867 (ish).

@Stereoguy In this case, ex=patriot Irish, or men of Irish descent, who blamed Britain for all Ireland's troubles and wanted an independent Ireland. Many were veterans of the American Civil War and hoped to persuade the British government to grant their demands by invading Canada, then a British possession. They failed when the Canadians and a handful of British regulars pushed them out. The name comes from a semi-mythical band of warriors called the Feine who may have lived a couple of thousand years ago
