Nearly forgotten naval skirmish [I Love History]

Few people in the UK will remember the battle between HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake. It was fought in 1813, during the war between the United Kingdom and the USA, which was little more than a sideshow when the UK was involved in the much greater confrontation with Napoleon Bonaparte. It is possible that Bonaparte manoeuvred the US into the war to distract the UK so he could launch his attack on Russia.
In this pictured encounter, Shannon captured Chesapeake after an action that lasted only 15 minutes.

Remember the prizes here were the sugar/rum islands in the Caribbean - Jamaica and Hispaniola

@mainvane I thought the Americans wanted Canada: their first move was an invasion of Canada.

@helensusanswift rum was currency to pay for expansive adventurers

@mainvane Excellent system! So the Americans hoped to grab the British colonies in the Caribbean then as well as Canada?

I heard of skirmish so many times before, but I never really know what exactly it is

I didn't know about that! I will have to research it! I love history :-)
