Do scarecrows work?

I'm trying to protect the fruit and vegies in the garden. Last year the birds and squirrels kept stealing, so I am thinking of making a scarecrow.

For short periods of time, they do work, but after a little while animals get used to it and realize it's no threat.

The more you change it, ie location and their outfit, the longer it takes them to overcome it.

Though I doubt it will scare squires too much and if birds can get to the fruit without going near the scarecrow it might not work.

@Viper we've netted up some of the fruit trees and strawberries. But you can't do them all. We planted 50 fuchsia bulbs and the squirrels have dug them all up and eaten them. It's a never ending battle. But luckily they leave a few things alone.

@Travelbug Yeah, not much stops squires other than physical force, or bad tasting sprays.
[c=#359E00]scarecrow alone won't be that effective, put sounds too to scare them[/c]

From experience, no. The last one I saw was queuing to sign on outside the local jobcentre and looked unemployable.

@MrWalker I hope you gave him some spare change

@Travelbug Of course, he looked bedraggled
