I Absolutely Adore Cats

A follow up about Julius losing his tail.

I called the animal shelter where he was left, asked about him, and told her I'd like to come and pick him up. She was hesitant, as it was my ex-husband who left him there after he was attacked.

She hesitated, thinking that he and I were living together on the farm, and I explained to her that we are no longer together, and that I lived in town. That he moved out to the farm and took Julius with him. She explained that she just didn't want to send him to the same home, that she'd rather put him up for adoption. As we talked more about the situation, so hold me that she would call me back in about 20 minutes.

She called and told me that after a discussion with the vet and the others there, they all agreed that he should be with someone he knows and trust. And that the surgery would cost $1000 (would have been $3000-$4000 if he was taken to a vet's office).

I didn't have that kind of money, so I had some friends who knew Julius loan me some money to pay for it. She told me that I had until Thursday to pick him up, and on Friday they'd put him in the adoption side of the center. I would be devastated.

On Thursday, a friend drove me the 30 miles to get up to the other side of the bay. As we arrived, I was a bit nervous, trying to picture just how he would look, if he'd know who I was, etc. When I spoke on the phone, she told me that Julius needed his rest and needed to spend his life indoors, which I was planning on anyway. But the way she sounded, she made it sound as though he wasn't feeling very well and needed his rest. But, luckily, I didn't need to feed him any more medications.

When I walk into the shelter, the woman behind the counter stated that he was spunky and a great cat. When the vet came out, he told me that Julius was just fine and would get along well. Again, just keep him inside. He asked for the carrier. As I paid the debt, he went back and got Julius for me. At the sound of my voice, he meowed. And as he put the carrier on the counter, he looked at me, and meowed again. He knew just who I was.

Of course, he howled on the way home. I had my hand in the carrier, which he leaned on the whole way. As soon as I brought him and let him out, he roamed, and I could see that he recognized where he was, and continued on with his day as though nothing had happened.

Although he looks different, he is the same old boy that he was when he'd left for the farm. As I read the reports from the vet, I saw that it said "This cat should be indoors only, but will require lots of human attention because he is quite a lively older boy." Perfect, I will let him live at the shop, where he will get lots of attention from my customers.

I have always had at least one cat in my life. Sometimes two, sometimes three. And, one of them always lived at my shop. During the period that Julius was gone, people who came in on a regular basis were surprised to see that I didn't have one here. I had just moved, and was going to get a kitten once things settle down. But now that I have Julius, someone everybody knows, the shop is complete.

Julius is home.
