Stellaris tips: Diplomacy
If anything Diplomacy is more beneficial for getting items you need...apart from that being a warfaring race tends to be far more rewarding and makes becoming "The Big Guy" far easier.

As army transport ships do not have any weapons on them (Pro-tip, keep them out of combat)

Anyway it would be best to build that fleet up, do not just let them idle at your home system.
