I Had A Strict Mother Growing Up

Did your mother have a completely different personality with others than she had with you? My mom was always yelling at me, snapping out orders, lecturing me, verbally abusing me etc and she always talked to me in a condescending tone. But when she talked to her friends she was always happy, upbeat and fun sounding. It seemed so fake to me. I especially noticed this when the phone rang. She would be nasty to me and when she answered the phone she would instantly snap into her fun, happy sounding persona.

It was interesting when she had company over. She wanted to keep the front up so she would talk to me in the same tone of voice she talked to her friends in. She was still strict and liked to humiliate me in front of them but would keep that same fake girly girl sounding voice while doing it. When it was just me alone she would take her mask off.
