If someone disagrees with you or your beliefs, does that mean they hate you and what you stand for?

Too many people conflate disagreement with hatred.

People throw out "hatred" as a way to silence discussion, debate, and disagreement.

I disagree with this and now i hate you. We shall duel in front of the town hall and fate will decide who lives when the clock hits twelve.
SW-User
@Oleander Then it's pistols at high noon--I shall be there!
SW-User
@SW-User The Town Hall is a gun free zone...I hate you both for not knowing this and clinging to your guns! 😉

I'm sorry, I don't know what conflate is.
SW-User
@Serenitree "Conflate" means to join two things together (often falsely), as if they were one and the same.

@SW-User Thank you. If I hated everyone with whom I disagree, I'd be consumed by hate. Especially online. There are so many issues and so many opinions and there is no possible way for a sane, honest person, to agree with everyone. Disagreements are healthy, if we can discuss the issues, we may even find a common meeting ground.

Hate, discrimination, intolerance, bigot, racist... these are all terms that are so overused now because so many people cannot handle an opposing opinion. There modus operandi is to demean and personally attack instead of contribute to the discussion in a healthy manner.
SW-User
@SW-User I agree. Now of course some opinions are insulting by their very nature, but that is not often the case when these labels are tossed around.
SW-User
@SW-User Yes, that's true too.

Disagreement is fine, but when they tell you're wrong and what you've been believing in your whole life is just fairy tales, that's just outright insulting.
So in my opinion many confuse disagreement with being ignorant and insulting.
SW-User
@Dan193 Yes, people should be able to disagree without being insulting.

One could, for example, disagree with homosexuality morally while not calling homosexuals "perverts"; that would be insulting.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@SW-User yes, I completely agree.
SW-User
I choose to be around people that are able to agree to disagree but also know the difference between fact and opinion.

If they can't discuss their points of view in a civilized manner and move on once the topic is done, they are drama and hate no one needs in their life.
Shane1981c · 41-45, M
It shouldn't. It merely means they disagree on that one thing. You can disagree with somebody and still get along with them ..
Depends on the people though ..

I agree. It often depends on the person and also the subject of the disagreement. I'm always surprised at the amount of heat generated by politics.
SomeHand · 31-35, M
Depends on the person.

I can hate someone’s actions but that doesn’t mean I hate them.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
Some do but most are there to give feedback and there’s no hate.
KingofPizza2 · 36-40, M
And then they escalate with actual hatred, too!
Spinner · 61-69, M
I disagree but I don’t hate you. Think about it.
