I Am Creative

I was born creative. As a child, I had imaginary friends, fashioned bobby pins into dolls, hung upside down from chairs to imagine walking on the ceiling. My world, as I saw it, was a malleable playground for my imagination. I learned early how paradigms are to be broken, how life itself is an artform.

Drawing, sculpting, writing, painting ... you name it, I've done it over these many decades because that's how a creative is supposed to channel one's expressive impulses. You're supposed to make it "real", something tangible that can be hung on a wall or read or put on a shelf. As a creative, you're prompted to sell your art, put it "out there". Otherwise, it's considered a waste of time. Time is money, so they say. Why create without it being marketable, or even seen?

Creatives are hounded by validation. To have anyone say "I like that" is an endorphin rush.
To be paid for something you created is ambrosia.
These validations can kill creativity.
Judgment can kill creativity.

Most of us know the old question "if a tree falls in the forest, does anyone hear it?"
Creativity is like that. It does and must grow and fall in a forest where no one may ever witness it.

I do photography and I'm constantly bombarded by people to put it out, have an art show, sell it, and what not. I'll admit I had an art show once and I enjoyed the pressure of it in how it forced me to think how can I present this for an audience? Having the validation was good but did nothing in the creative process for me.

In ways, having the knowledge, what worked to impress doesn't help as it allows me to be lazy if I want to be.

@SW-User Excellent feedback. Thank you!
I've exhibited in a helluva lot of galleries. How to present for an audience is a skill I was adept at. How to create without any anticipation of my work being seen is my goal.

Thanks! I was slightly nervous of my wording as I did it quickly.

You work in drawing, painting, sculpture and writing? In ways I envy you. A photograph is a document, sans skill, outside of interpretation - which is what I think art is in clearest form and my envy is you can create, while I rely on what exists.

To nailed the world of the creative! I've pondered these very things over and over, and the very pressure to create kills the vibe.
