Just because one was told or taught something doesn't necessarily mean it was correct. Each christian will stand before God and be judged by what the bible says - not by what their parents told them, nor by what some preacher/teacher said.
"And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth." - Acts 17:11

Should be noted that that's how Christianity was until the Reformation, for the most part. It was interpreted by clergy and theologians and handed down to the people. The Catholic church doesn't believe in sola scriptura; they believe there can be spiritual truth from sources outside the Bible.

Do what is right for you and don't judge others.
What you believe the scripture says may vary vastly from what I or someone else believes the scripture says.

I've noticed there are as many interpretations of what scripture says as there are Christians.
