What's a skill you learned that changed your life for the better?

rckt148 · 61-69, M
Life saving techniques ,especially someone burned or loss of limbs ,reviving someone that was drowned ,,its more involved then basic first aid
We had to stabilize people at sea ,and do our best to sure they were stable enough to survive transport (and preserve the limbs )Then transport to a hospital ,,if we had to bring them in or call for a Helo Medivac
nothing like saving lives ,
We have saved people that have cussed us out for saving them ,injuries so bad they would have preferred to be dead ,but most get past that ,,I am disabled now ,,I do understand your whole life being changed in the blink of an eye .
most are grateful, show gratitude for saving a loved one
But my best skill is being a parent
I can build a lot of things ,repair a lot of things ,play several instruments that have made me a killer living ,
My greatest accomplishment is my family ,and several others I have helped raise
I took the sternness of my Grandma ,but also the grace and forgiveness
she had ,getting them to gain my trust , they later hate letting me down .
Kids and animals listen to me
I have been told its the voice of authority ,,,whatever it is
From toddlers to teens ,adults over 30 ,20's you kind of have to pray they listened but you ,but knowing you have to let them make their own mistakes ,work it out themselves ,,and then when they find out they don't know it all
Then they want your advice ,help figuring out where to go from here
Kids I have raised generally will do more for me then anyone else
and I am the strict one ,,they won't admit it
But most kids love someone who cares enough to set boundaries ,never makes idle threats ,,if I say something I mean it ,,I explain things
I never say "Just because I said so " and I tell them the truth
I keep my promises ,,, So even if they just have to show me when they "Get Grown" ,,so far they all come back ,,wiser for the experience
ready to be part of a close family that will always have their backs
all for one ,one for all ,,I am a very blessed man

learning how to bake the cookie
using the secret ingredient
and how to present it best
served me well
probably all of them. the most helpful one has been programming, I suppose.

To chill, even when one thinks one can't. I still don't have the world's longest fuse--and I don't apologize for that--but improving what psychologists call "impulse control" has helped me immeasurably over the years.
