Assassins Creed- For the present day storyline, I think focusing on Desmond, whether you like him or not, kept the present story more interesting and focused. And although in Black Flag and Rouge you're not directly or actively helping out, I like how much more information I got going through abstergos entertainment offices as an employee and your still helping in a was by going about and hacking and not by exposition dumping. But with the last 2, sitting behind a computer only seeing and hearing about the present story, and your only "helping" is playing the game as you would even if you weren't asked to "help" feels so detached from the present story, that any acknowledgement of the present day story feels like it's getting in the way of the main story in the past. There's no interaction with it so why show it? A lot stuff happened with them (Shaun and Rebecca and others) too that could've been really interesting and emotional investing if you were a character standing by their side as it was happening.
