Why do coworkers feel it’s mandatory we talk to each other?

Then I feel bad for not talking to them despite them being relentless in creating conversation.

It's the law. If you don't talk to them you are bludgeoned with a trenching spade. It should have been in the memo they sent to you or your e-mail- Check your spam folder, it may be in there.
