Have you ever had to use a trackball? 馃柌

I had never heard of one until this evening. 馃槯

I have one. They're super comfortable to use just for day to day computing. But when you get into CAD software you really do need to the accuracy of a normal mouse.

The trackball has been around for perhaps as long as the mouse - after all, it does the same thing by the same method, measuring displacement in two directions by the ball rotating two slotted discs at right angles to each other, past photo-electric sensors.

It was and as far as know still is, particularly used in larger and better forms than those on lap-tops, for maritime, military and some industrial applications where a mouse would obviously be impracticable.

Yup. I actually find them much more comfortable than a regular mouse. Although I don't really have much need for them nowadays. The trackpads on Apple's laptops are just so good. 馃槏

I absolutely used to hate the ones they used to build into laptops. My dad had a couple of laptops with those ridiculous little trackballs, they just used to get filthy and gummy all the time.

I have never tried using one. 馃槯

@zoech Spend some time with one. They're easy to get used to. Personally, I actually found it hard to go back to using a regular mouse after using a trackball.

Only when playing centipede or missile command

@SW-User My computer's mice and other peripherals have always had electrical leads... ;-)

Arm problems from too much mouse-driving led to my employer supplying me with a pointer that looked vaguely like a joy-stick, but in fact used in the same way as a mouse, though held in a much more natural manner, with the palm of the hand vertical and the fingers less tightly clenched.

The particular model I used was called by a "Penguin" by its makers, who continued the wit by giving it a stylised penguin appearance, but complete with bow tie as in the nickname for formal Dinner wear! The beak was one of the controls, the scroll-wheel I think, and the bow-tie operated the switch.

The device I use now, with my home PC, is similar but without any fanciful animal references.

I have used lap-tops with contact-pad cursor-drivers, and I think one with track-ball; but I find lap-tops generally physically awful things, and their screens would be too small for my purposes anyway.

Sure... since 1995 I use Logitech trackballs... :) I've just bought a new one an MX Ergo. 鈽猴笍
