I Want To Talk About Community

Student Loan amnesty: I think student loan borrowers should have their debt cancelled by doing community service, joining the military or joining the Peace Corps.

Military veterans should be able to attend college free.

I say college should be affordable or free. It used to be that way and still is in more progressive countries and Mexico too.

@Platoscave In the 1980's tuition at a California State University was a few hundred a semester. I worked a part-time job on campus while I went to school. I was able to graduate with my BA in 1987.

Now the cost of college has skyrocketed. Young people either can't go to college at all or are burdened with huge student loan debt. We are sabotaging our country's future by making higher education un-affordable.
I understand what you mean, however, cancelling student loan with community servive will not work as it is in billions of dollars. And my give a wrong message to the masses and abuse will increase.

And why should vetrans get a free pass and not others?

@aaaabbbb Veterans have performed a service for the country and risked life and limb. They should be re-paid for that service.

For our future prosperity we need a trained population, skilled in many fields. College must be affordable to the average person, otherwise we have millions permanently stuck in low-paying, dead-end jobs. That is certain to result in social upheaval. It will be very short-sighted of us to fail to invest in education for our people.
@badminton i agree that Veteran perorm or give the ultimate service and sacrfices to the nation. However, So do the any law enforcement personal when risking their lives as well as firemen/women professionals. I thought armed forcess already cover tution fees for the active members. The issue comes in when an ordinary citizen of the country who does not have access to also want equal access. The person who joins the armed forces joinses it with his or her own free will. Same as the law enforcement, if every one wants to be preveliaged based on the job duties to the country (all the teachers union and other unions of firefighters and so on with collective bargaining) they all get into the force or job knowing all the risks, than later want pay raise increase that noy everyone gets and taxes are increased to cover.

The point is, we should provide our entire to an educational system where everyone has equal opportuinities. Right now people heading to Private IV league school/colleges get the best of the best education as well ad the top jobs.

More expensive to have them join the military than just paying the loan. A lot more. Peace Corps eh maybe as an option not something I'd force people into though. Community service is cool though.

I believe veterans should have free tuition at certain colleges. As far as everyone else, should pay their debt.

@BlueRain In the U.S., the average price of an undergraduate degree increased roughly 161%, since 1987. (marketwatch.com)

As of 2018 student loans now make up the largest chunk of U.S. non-housing debt. Yes, more than both credit cards or auto loans. (Forbes)

@BlueRain College tuition has skyrocketed in the last 30 years. College is un-affordable for millions of Americans. Millions are saddled with huge student loan debt, which is a major drag on the economy.
BlueRain · F
College is only for those that can afford it.
xinbaba · 61-69, M
I'm not OK with canceling their debt. But I am OK with reducing the interest rate on their remaining debt.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@xinbaba In the Bible it is written, "Every seventh year you shall grant a remission of debts" Deuteronomy 15.1

Making college free diminishes the value of the degree.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@TheunderdogofNY We need to invest in our people. We need engineers, technicians, medical professionals, scientists. We need trained people for the economy and society to prosper. Now many of our bright young people can't afford higher education. By not providing affordable college we are sabotaging our future.

Many other countries recognize the need to invest in their people and have free, or low cost, college for their citizens.
