@bearthebear: in the Early Spring, just before Easter; many cruise lines have repositioning cruises from different ports in the East Coast of the US to Europe/Southampton. They go to the US around the end October/ early November. Occasionally you can do a 3-4 week cruise round trip to the US on various cruise lines.

Being practically on the other side of the world, the only means that makes sense IS flying. Perhaps you can start by flying in a small plane first. Take a friend with you for support and comfort.

Some cargo ships take a few passengers. Obviously they don't have all the fancy trappings and gee-gaws of a cruise ship, and are a lot slower, but it's one way.

Your only other choice is a ship. Its going to take longer and probably be more expensive though.
