Should I or shouldn’t I?

Aussie Rules... (AFL) Australian Football League. I love my footy, it’s rough & tumble & full of action. Recently the AFL has started up women’s teams throughout Australia & it’s been quite a success and gaining momentum on a daily basis.

Recently I told my gf that I was considering qualifying. I am not heavy set in build, but I’m tall, athletic, lots of stamina, well coordinated, tough & not afraid to get into it when required, that’s my opinion anyway.

A couple of weeks ago I contacted my local club & they booked me in for a tryout. I was on the field for about ten minutes & the selectors call me back in again. They told me these girls are playing this weekend and we don’t need you running around wiping them out, when can you start? They told me I had all the skills and guts required, only my skills needed to be tuned. As expected, I came home with a couple of bruises and a small cut above my eye, but that’s doesn’t matter.

Here lies my dilemma, my gf isn’t happy about it as she’s worried about permanent injuries athletes sustain throughout their careers. Plus I’ve just spent five years completing a dergree in. Agricultural Science, but haven’t been able to secure a job locally at this stage. And yes her opinion does count as it looks as if we’ll be married within the next couple of years, she’s also stated that she has no intention of trying to talk me out of it.

Neither of us live at home so we have to support ourselves. She’s still a full time student with a part time job. I work in a surf shop part time and a dance instructor with the odd gig between. Although the girls are being paid, it’s not much at this stage and even less as a rookie, making ends meet will be an issue,

When I weigh it all up I’m starting to think I’m being selfish if I pursue this, I’m stuffed if I know, big sighs 🙆🤷

If you’re passionate about it and they offer physiotherapy and medical cover try it.

@Les02 Although on the other hand, I have no doubt that you’d become their ambassador/pinup girl 😍

How long have women been playing AFL? What is their injury rate? Have you done some research?
Les02 · 26-30, F
@Mugin16 As l said, it’s new & like all heavy contact sports there are a lot of injuries. But that doesn’t concern me.
