Though there was also a fair share of irrationality in the age of reason. I actually meant the greek & roman era - I think, as a society, we have devalued individual intelligence and ability.

It depends on your ideals, individual enlightenment, for instance, isn't so encouraged on the different levels of society, but some would argue why that's a good thing.
