So embarrassing when you talk highly about someone who ends up disappointing you.

When I have put people on that pedestal of perfection, i am always disappointed. But then I grow by realizing i need to learn to forgive and grow in myself to be a better less failing imperfect friend to them. Do they not see the imperfections in me yet love anyway?
It is only embarrassing if you realize at the same time that you've disappointed others, too. People can disappoint us, but we should never disappoint ourselves.
@Ratatouillesque: Well now you know..always expect disappointment.

This is why I prefer not to be put on a pedestal, I'm quite clumsy and will fall off easily.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. You give people credits and set certain expectations, and they end up not being up to par.
It's sad and disappointing, but in no way is your fault.
