Ha ha..that 70's song just cued in my head.
Go for it. Practical, and one of the more visually pleasing martial arts disciplines to watch.
The newspaper here ran a picture years ago in their lifestyle section. A photographer had snapped a student on our empty beach with his bow staff, practicing.
Snapped as he left the ground in a flying kick, bow staff planted in the shore, flexed and bent; his body horizontal to the sand.
I saved the picture, having brought back the fun of those old KUNG FU movies we boys grew up on.
