I helped a friend move multiple times over past 2 months. Am I asking to much to get paid for it?

He said by giving me his refrigerator that he was going to leave behind anyway that he's doing me a big favor. I agree because I needed one but he was going to abandon it anyway. Is it too much to ask for $40 when I went to his house and threw out stuff about 10 times these past 2 months in addition to helping him lift his heavy tvs and microwave and carry all his paintings over there?
