Finding out what the noise was?

So last night, we're sitting and watching TV, and there is a loud noise, like something falling in the condo's garage. Look around the garage, nothing. Check the roof, nothing. Nothing inside. Weird thunder. Maybe.

This morning the garage door won't open. Apparently something broke.

@waleskinder @Stereoguy That's not bad, and I'll have him go over everything. The rubber thingy on the bottom is wore out and has a hole in it so we've been getting critters in the garage.

The springs that lift a garage door are under a huge load of pressure. They make a loud crack when they snap - and that's usually why a garage door won't go up.

@hlpflwthat This sounded like a large plastic trash bin falling. I don't even know what I'd be looking for.

@TamAngel Most doors 8' or wider have an overhead spring lift assist. There's a spring coiled on a tube above the door. There may be 2 springs on a larger door. When a spring breaks there is just a simple separation somewhere in the coil. Not the easiest thing to spot, but not rocket science. ladder and a flashlight should do the trick.

Thanks for everyone's comments. The door is fixed, and cost $575, but the opener apparently burned out too, so he had to replace some gizmo on that. We had it fixed rather than some fancy shmancy blue toothy new one (which would have been $400). More than I expected 😥, but works like a charm now. 😀
