Maybe it was desperate attempt for you to notice him in a temporal state of loneliness, maybe he got discouraged by your response, maybe it was a genuine compliment without any ulterior motive and he didn't repeat it to avoid looking like there was more to it. I could probably think of more explanation if I gave it more thought, but without further context it's meaningless to guess. Have you ever told him how about your confusion regarding that statement?
