Why does touching something that hurts usually make it feel better?

Is it touching it that helps? Or "squeezing" it? Like compression? I don't think just touching helps much.

It’s called the gate control theory of pain.

Basically your body cannot process both pain and pressure at the same time. Pressure closes the ‘nerve gates’ along the nerve pathways (maybe in the spinal cord? It’s been a long time since I read up on it) and the transmission is lost before it reaches the brain. It’s far more complex than this but that’s the basic idea.

@Pureblossom I used to be a birth doula. A lot of pain relief techniques used to ease discomfort in childbirth hinge on this theory.
That's a question I'd like to know the answer to as well. 🤔
