Why are curse words bad?

Most people just use them as exclamations but what exactly makes them bad
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M Best Comment
Curse words tend to be created by the lower classes as forms of expression.
They originally probably got banned because employers; the church or the crown considered them either vulgar or personally offensive statements on their character !

If you take a 'reasonably' safe word like....Goddamn. God in this instance was thought to be from the Norse -goth and damnare was Latin. Meaning, to condemn.
Perfectly usable in Norse society. It was only when the French started using it to describe the English back in the 1340's during the hundred years war that it was seen as a curse word !

My favourite curse word is Bollocks ! If for no other reason than you can put some real venom behind it when you say it !
It means either male testicles, or rubbish; lies; bullshit depending on how it's used.
Many different ideas as to where this originated. Some say olde English some say French from about the middle-ages

Some so-called bad words are perfectly normal body parts and biological functions that Western society prefers to pretend we're above. You can blame most of the aversion to them on religion and the body taboos it has ingrained in society.

Furthermore, in English, most of the words we are taught to treat that way are from the old Germanic and Norse languages (shit, fuck, cunt), while the same terms from Norman French and Latin (defecate, coitus, vagina) are considered more polite. When the Norman French, who also used Latin among the educated class, invaded Saxon Britain they had the power to treat the language spoken by the locals as inferior and unfit for polite discourse.

Over time, being considered the inferior word added to most people's prudery produced a group of words that are considered "bad".

cursing too much is just going to show what a fucked up head the curser has.

hi rickfreeman15
references to taboos.
I suppose that begs the question what makes a taboo?
The answer is custom. In Victorian England female ankles were so taboo that they put linen covers on table legs.

IMO if you can't make a sentence without using a bad word you need help.

It is the meaning they represent
rickfreeman15 · 22-25, M
@Axeroberts What meaning do they have? I read (don't know if its a hoax or not) that the word 'fuck' means 'Fornicate Under the Command of the King' and originated during a time where the population was low or something.

@rickfreeman15 for unlawful carnal knowledge.

I've wondered this before.
