Why do christians pray? [Spirituality & Religion]

According to the christian myth, their god has this great plan and always does what's best for us. Praying amounts to asking it to do something it hadn't thought of doing. Isn't it rather arrogant of them to presume they know better than their "almighty god"?

You are correct

Matthew 6:7

7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

@Emosaur Remember, christians only believe those parts of the bible that suit their agenda. They ignore anything that doesn't.

@Emosaur 🎀You are taking it out of context and you don't understand what he means!

@Emosaur What is your point? There's no contradiction. The lord will sometimes give you things if you ask him, like any good father. "Ask and ye shall receive." But what Jesus is saying is that God already knows your desires so you don't have to keep asking him because that would be futile. The lord's will be done. If you ask the Lord for something that is in his will, he will make it happen. That is why we say: if it be the Lord's will.

@Emosaur What God meant was , never has God ever made the sun stand still for 15 hours so Joshua could win the war!
LoveTriumphsOverHate · 36-40, M
@Carazaa That's the way I interpreted that verse. I have never interpreted that verse the way Emosaur is trying to interpret it. He's taking it way out of context.

@Emosaur
It says that after that event he never listened to anyone ever again
There's a difference between a prayer and a command. There's also a difference between 'hearing' and 'listening,' or 'hearkening unto,' is the words that some versions use.

I'm sure you understand the difference so I don't have to explain it. Joshua's did not 'pray' to God. He 'commanded' the sun to stand still.

Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies.

@Emosaur

🎀You have to understand what God meant, and please don't take offense but you sometimes think in black and white, all or nothing.

🎀People who are black and white thinkers have a lot of depression because they cant see the positives in situations, so please don't jump to conclusions so fast. If someone said to you, "I can't go with my family to your party on Christmas", don't assume that she isn't coming, because she might mean she will come alone a little later.

🎀People who are black and white thinkers jump to conclusions a lot so please be careful you don't fall into that trap, because you might have relationship problems and I don't want you to have any problems.🙂

@Emosaur Nope, you jumped to conclusion. Like I said God really meant that he will not stop the sun again. He hears my prayers all the time. But then again I never tell God anything, I ask!

But the Sun wasn’t moving

@newjaninev2 Time stood still 15 hrs!
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Carazaa Time is change... so for 15 hours nothing in the universe changed? But of course, if time is standing still, how do we know it was 15 hours?

"I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.'" So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down. Isaiah 38
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Carazaa that is incoherent. What is it trying to say?

Or should I write:
Neither beast, fowl nor man shall comprehend what has here been writ, and in the enormity of their confusion shall they fall about and plead for clarity, but the profundity of these words exceeds all understanding
Carazaa · F
@newjaninev2 We can't understand how God can make the shadow stand still for a day but he did because he loved Joshuah and he did it for the Jews so they would win over their enemies. Joshuah needed more sunlight. I have had many things happened to me that is just so miraculous, after I was saved.

@Carazaa So your god froze the entire universe so that some members of a particular ape species on a nothing planet in a nothing solar system in an unremarkable galaxy of 200 billion stars among a further 200 billion galaxies could slaughter some other members of the same ape species.
