Do you know anyone who was or is a member of a cult? [Spirituality & Religion]

I know of someone who tried to start a cult based around a particular type of EDM. He used to be a friend of mine in the 90s. Before he started this cult he was stealing power tools from his job and selling them for crack. At that point I stopped speaking to him. He is repeatedly locked away in mental health unit.

A year or so after I stopped speaking to him, he set up a website, tried to recruit people randomly off the street including people I used to call friends. He had a list of bizarre rules on the website related to this style of EDM. My friends would tell me about how he would walk up to them and show them spiritual books trying to recruit them. Sometimes he would give books away. His material on the website was copy+pasted from spiritual people like Deepak Chopra. At one point his website had 50 something members. I had nothing to do with him but would keep tabs on the website just in case. At one point I bumped into him locally and just pretended not to know him. That really freaked him out. He actually became quite obsessed with me too after I stopped speaking to him.

Last I heard he was living in a apartment with no electricity as he no longer 'believed in electricity'.
