What does Halloween mean to you? [Spirituality & Religion]

Halloween is not our traditional feast and the form in which it is presented mocks certain type of people. This time of the year is traditionally associated with All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day here. Therefore most people are used to reverent atmosphere instead of Halloween parties and cosplaying. Every year, you would encounter at least one person complaining about All Soul's day "sinking into obscurity" because of Halloween.

Which eye should I roll first? 🙄

I can't identify neither with American Halloween traditions nor traditional Christian All Souls' Day. All Souls' Day has always been prevalent, of course, but just like Christmas I never perceived it in Christian context. When I was a child I used to be excited to go to cemetery to see thousands of candle lights and breathe that special atmosphere. I loved the cold, sharp November air filled with faint smoke and the smell of paraffin wax. We always tried to persuade our parents to visit graves after the nightfall to see the lights. If we didn't it brought BIG disappointment. Another disappointment used to be full marble graves. We preferred graves with the soil on top because we loved to stick large number of small thin candles into it. Putting tea candles on marble board was less interesting. 😝
It was great fun for us when we were little. We didn't understand the true meaning of the Holiday yet.

We carved a pumpkin once or twice as well, but that's the only memory associated with Halloween I have. Our father attached it to the railing on our balcony and the carved face glowed in the dark for couple of nights. Nice memories.
(edited: Oh yes, I forgot! Another thing: we used to have this computer game called "Incredible Machine: Contraptions" where special items appeared on special days. We always rejoiced seeing Jack-O-Lantern on October 31. 😁 I loved that game.)

Unfortunately, it seems that the atmosphere of All Souls' Day as I remember it belongs to the past now. The smell of paraffin wax is replaced with weird synthetic aroma that I always associated with candies or aromatic pens.
Weird enough, I can tell you.

For me it is the Celtic New Year. The end and celebration of the harvest, a change from the lightest time of the year and the beginning of the darkest months. A time for introspection and reflection. A time to think of and remember the ones who have passed

@Salix75 yes. In the northern hempishere where nature is calling the shots, not some date on a caldendar.

Halloween for me is a day to remember the loved ones who have gone before us. I carve pumkins to scare away evil spirits and bake remberance cookies. Though i prefer to call it samhien.

Lol anyone who believes in hell believes in paganism. Hell does not exist in the Bible or any other monotheistic book. Satan is mentioned well but not where he lives. Most of the time he's on earth. 'Hel' comes from Norse mythology; in an effort to convert the Norse to Christianity, priests began to cherry pick. It caught on and the concept of hell spread.

@Shaun "...Those who deny (their Lord), for them will be cut out a garment of Fire. Over their heads will be poured out boiling water. With it will be scalded what is within their bodies, as well as (their) skins. In addition there will be maces of iron (to punish) them. Every time they wish to get away therefrom, from anguish, they will be forced back, and (it will be said), "Taste the Penalty of Burning!" (22:19-22) for starters ...

You do know the Bible has been reformed many times right? The old testiment never mentioned hell, nor did the new testiment. When the Vatican was built, Pope Paul I reformed the Bible. The gospels weren't even completed till around 100CE! The Christianity you know is Pauline and is no way genuine to the teachings of Christ. Originally the new testiment spoke heavily on Salvation, not Damnation.

@Shaun that's very interesting.

When the kids were little it was a fun day of trick or treating. Other than that Halloween means little to me. Now that our youngest four are teens this day holds no meaning for our family.

Absolutely nothing.. just another day

Right now it just means my ex-girlfriend commemorating our 6th day of being apart by going to some halloween teenage party. So I guess it means moving on and new hopes.
