WTF is a 5-year lobbying ban!?!? are you going to prevent us from talking to our representatives?!

JaneDoe23 · F
Calling your representative to voice concerns is different. Lobbying is basically bribery.

Lobbying takes many forms, if you cannot get hold of your representative then you are not being represented.

All voters will still be able to talk to their elected representatives. This ban is about former government officials being prohibited from becoming a paid lobbyist for five years after leaving government employment.

Thank you, I have since found that out, I was perhaps alarmed at the announcement that Trump made with little explanation -- a little explanation goes a long way.

@zmedleff1: Very true. Most things the government does aren't clear to begin with, and the news often isn't helpful in explaining things like bills with clarity either.

I am a former Social Studies teacher and am used to analyzing legal issues and legislation, but this tight-lipped and distraction-favoring approach keeps me (and I think a lot of people) off balance.

I believe the 5-year ban is for executive-level officials.

You're correct it is to prevent influential personalities within the administration from becoming professional lobbyists later. That is the clarity that was not offered by the man himself when he was signing the documents.
Sure I can get behind this, I suppose.

What does one have to do with the other?

Lobbying was named for the act of waiting in the entry chambers (lobby) of the capitol building until you saw your representative or senator, then approaching them to voice your concerns. Over the years it came to refer to professional lobby lurkers who would voice the concerns of people ... as a job... for pay -- because who has time to take off from work, travel, by coach or rail, across the country, to wait in the lobby of the capitol just to walk up to a guy and say "Lower Taxes" or "Land Grants"?
Then in a 3rd phase more and more of these professionals rates went up above that which conventional citizens could afford, so businesses and corporations began to be the only ones lobbying
Ta daaaa

NOW clarity is coming through as the articles roll in.

Lobbying should be banned forever.

If I go to my representative's office in DC and ask him to consider an issue and I am not allowed to do that then I am not being represented.
