Shouldn't most production be localized to limit the carbon footprint of shipping and trucking?

Why are corporations allowed to hide the supply chains and spread them out so far?

The pandemic proved just how much of a failure global supply chains and just in time production was. When your entire economic system requires nothing to go wrong there is a serious issue because reality doesn't work that way and it is a ticking time bomb. Also globalization has been used as a great way to hide exploitation. Don't like child labour? That's okay we will just offshore it so you don't have to see it. Don't like slavery? That's fine, we will hide it within the walls of private prisons.

[@346344,PicturesOfABetterTomorrow] Turning a blind eye to this is a sad commentary on our society.

What do you mean by "hide the supply chains?" Publicly owned companies are required by law to disclose such things to their shareholders.

[@1050026,RedBaron] sure. And in some other countries I can see the place where the food grows and the supermarket from the house. The potatoes that went into the chips in the bag? Nobody can say.

[@1201621,MotherHubbard] So what specific solution do you propose? Local doesn't automatically mean better.

Hiding? Local product of everything? I love this academic socialist dribble

Dad, did you tell her about the Death Star?

Globalization and "just in time" is an abject failure that will take years to undo. Most likely there will be a slight short term retreat and then some new new thing will bring us back to the same thing.
