it matters if the record shows a history of violence because that indicates a very impulsive and aggressive person, the kind who would start a war instead of looking for better ways of dealing with people

@Unlovable: and which candidate attacked his wife?
Justawmn · 41-45, F
Yes i agree w the violent person factor. I didn't know any candidate that hit his wife. But a history of violence no you shouldn't be allowed to run
Yes. To the point of providing clues to the candidate's character, honesty, leadership, respect for others, fairness, and sense of priorities.

No. If he or she is the best person to run the country, they could be Henry VIII for all I care

If they have not committed a crime, it doesn't matter at all. To me.

JFK and Johnson were philanderers while in office , clinton made it a big deal

To a limited extent. A divorce isn't too big of a deal, cheating is a bit more. Being single isn't really a problem. The confounding thing is when they have problems like multiple divorces and adultery, and claim to be running on religious virtues.

No. Private life is a private matter.
TexChik · F
Yeah well it happened and the libs thought nothing of it @Cierzo:
@TexChik: Yes, that's why character matters. Unfortunately, we seem to be in an era where the need to be in power trumps everything else.

@Heartlander: my point exactly

Only if they think they are the Pope and preach what they don't practice. Then it's fair game. Otherwise no.
Zonuss · 46-50, M
Fair game. But isn't it always.
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
Honestly, it depends. IDGAF if a political leader has affairs or broken marriages or whatever. If a political leader has committed rape or other serious crimes that people may say are related to their personal life, well then we have a problem.

Not at all. It's between the spouses
