Loser in AZ Senate Race Will Beat Her Victor to U.S. Senate

Rep. Martha McSally, the Arizona Republican who LOST in November to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by departing Sen. John Flake (R), has been appointed to fill the remainder of the late Sen. John McCain's term by Gov. Doug Ducey, who by state law is required to appoint someone from the same party as the departing senator.

Sen. John Kyle (R), the former senator who was appointed as McCain's replacement, is stepping down on December 31st.

McSally was defeated by fellow Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (D). But Sinema can't be sworn into office until January 3rd, when Flake's term would expire.

(And Ducey can't appoint Sinema to Flake's seat even if Flake resigned before January 3rd because Flake's a Republican and Sinema a Democrat.)

So, ironically, the defeated McSally will become the state's senior senator.

But Sinema won't have to run for re-election until 2024. I believe McSally will have to defend her seat in both 2020 and 2022

Correct.

Strange how life works sometimes, isn't it?

Just what we needed, another looser in the Senate.

😂

Does make me wonder if it's the first time a loser in the election beat the winner to the Senate.

She was probably picked by Ducey because Mitch McConnell wanted McSally to have an advanatage over a likely far more right-wing Republican challenger in the primary when the seat comes up for election for the full six-year term.

It was a great choice.
