@FloorGenAdm it means to be especially careful rather than taking a risk or making a mistake. “Error on the side of caution” doesn’t exist as a phrase known in the English language. Hope this helps for next time you want to use the phrase, the word you need is err.

Decorum and common courtesy will never be outdated to me. However, this cultural obsession with political correctness seems to me to be a guise to merely police the language of those with dissenting opinions, which I don't at all agree with.
