I Believe In Unconditional Love

I do... but...

I have learned from hard experience that you cannot love everyone unconditionally. Some people have holes in their souls and no matter how much love you give them it just goes right through them and and they need more and more and more but it never does any good and they never give anything back. I wasted a lot of years with people like that and it left me burned out. My husband needed a lot of love, a whole lot, but he let it in, he let it change him and he always gave back what he could. He is not perfect, I am not perfect, but we trust each other to at least do our best and we can easily forgive the rest. In my experience, that is the only kind of unconditional love that actually works.

Unconditional love is something I feel for my children and siblings and did for my parents. It hasn't got anything to do with expectations of being loved in return.

@Sweet517 I have always looked at unconditional love from a "forgive us our trespasses" point of view and you have given me a lot to think about. The idea of loving someone who does not care about you in return is odd to me. My brother, for instance, doesn't care at all about me, he doesn't even like me so I've just let it go. I can't actually say that I love him. I love my children with all my heart and I can't imagine not loving them, but if they did not care about me in return I would probably do the same as with my brother and just forget it and move on. Why spend energy on someone who does not care about you?

@MuguetDeMai I see your point. I guess it all comes down to how one defines the term " unconditional love."
