How Do Wild Animals Survive Extreme & Unusual Cold Weather?

Robins were at my neighbor’s house sitting around a pipe vent probably coming from a natural gas water heater, a flock of robins near the warm vent. I’ve also seen robins & cardinals sitting on the edge of a heated cattle tank, many dozens of them on a very frigid winter morning circling the top of the tank. I’m just wondering how the feral cat I feed has been surviving. Not even eating that much, comes around about 25% of what it did last winter and doesn’t finish the food either. I think someone else is sharing & they are keeping each other warm.

I wonder about the same things. I see small paw prints in the snow and wonder where the stray cats are. What about all the squirrel that run around all day long🤔

@iamnikki I haven’t seen that many birds. A huge flock of robins came here like they were running from the last snowstorm we had a couple days ago. There were many hundreds of them and I thought they’d never stop coming, a big long line of them, they filled the trees, house roofs, top of shed etc. And after they all got together they left again. Other than that I haven’t seen many birds. Heard a falcon squealing around this morning though. Like it was calling its mate or something.

@cherokeepatti I haven't seen many either. I saw one yesterday. I wondered if he had gotten left behind or got lost or something.

@iamnikki There were some mockingbirds here in December, they usually go south for the winter but some of them stayed around. And some Mississippi kites left to go south in the fall but some seemed to linger here later. I think animals are confused for some reason now.
All creatures suffer around such unusual weather events.
Every forest fire, tornado, flood causes untold suffering
just saying

Just remembered I didn't change the birds food for 4 days!!
