What is your opinion of mothers jealous of their own daughters?

My childhood best friend was a vibrant, smart and beautiful young girl who was immensely talented in the fine arts. She went on to earn scholarships and hone her craft professionally.

Unfortunately her parents, more specifically her mother seemed completely disinterested and even unsupportive. I never once saw her mom at a single theatrical play she acted in.

I used to wonder why this was given the encouragement she received from peers and other adults. When I slept over we'd dress up, do homework, clean her family's home.

Her parents rarely if ever acknowledged her contributions or achievements. I sensed things weren't quite right at home.

I know we're taught not to seek validation outside ourselves, but I can't help but wonder if encouragement in her youth from her parents could've reinforced her sense of self-worth and prevented her indefinite departure. Rest in peace, dearest friend.

Yes we are taught not to see validation outside ourselves. That's great advice ONCE YOU LEARN YOUR WORTH! A child that has monsters for parents grows up believing the are not worthy. It's incredibly painful made worse by society who looks down upon those that don't idolize their parents.
There was a book written by Andrew Vachs it was short stories, one of those stories was about a childhood friend. This friend was not loved by his parents as the author was. In the end the friend didn't do well in life and died early. Andrew Vachs went on to become a lawyer, who writes books in order to fund his practice which represents abused children. The children can't pay him so that is why he writes.
I'm sorry to hear that! 🤗

Yes, mother can be jealous of their own daughters this is probably more common than people think. Women have daughters and resent them but they want sons so they can treat them like the husband they never had.

I feel bad for that poor girl I hope she's doing ok
