Because you actually talk to people on the internet as opposed to those present in your day to day life. I bet half of the people we ever get to know on the internet have passed us on the street or lives next door.

I believe it's almost the same. Dealing face to face is not that easy like with a keyboard, from the comfort of your room etc, but of course on internet you can find easily people who shares your same interests etc.
