Good question. Basically, it stopped - largely - being a poltical protest artform. Plus, to be a rapper you were almost expected to also be a gangster.

It was about people's struggles and what they went through. People heard that and thought it was cool or acceptable. So they continued those behaviors and turned that fake struggle into a profit.
Anything bad always tend to attract people more it seems

One guy did it. "It went viral" and it sold. Then they all jumped on the bandwagon and it spread like wildfire.

Like many things, Rap has changed with time. Go back to when Rap music originated. It was from history, challenges, survival and pain. The music used to come from the heart, now it's just a bunch of gloating assholes with too much money pretending they understand the heritage of the genre.

@hunkalove: no, there have been rappers in the past who have left thoughtful/positive messages in their music. Now'days it's roasting other rappers, calling women bitches and hoes, calls for violence against one another and so on.
