I Have Been to Another Country

I am half-Finnish, and I have visited Finland numerous times. My parents took me when I was a baby several times, and more as a toddler and throughout my childhood. Recently we haven't visited as often. Money, school and work get in the way. I love Finland. The smell of all the pine trees and the atmosphere is so relaxing. It's a beautiful place. I visit the town of Kuopio. It's wonderful there. The market square is fascinating; there's so many little nooks and crannies to explore that I didn't think could fit. Sadly, I can't speak Finnish. I have tried learning, but it is incredibly difficult I can never remember the rules or the pronunciations. I know a few words, but not enough to speak it confidently.

I've visited France twice on school trips. The first was a day trip to Lille, which was interesting. Being about 11-12 years old and absolutely rubbish at speaking French, I don't remember much. Myself and two friends went on a Ferris wheel there was in the middle of the market, which was terrifying but also very fun. I won't be going on one again, though. It didn't feel very safe. The second was a week long trip to Paris. We visited the Eiffel Tower and all of the famous landmarks. We also went to Disneyland. I wasn't too interested in that because I've never been a Disney child, it's not been a big part of my life. I didn't try snails, although they were on the menu. I loved the bridge that had all of the padlocks in it, and I'm saddened to know that it no longer exists. All the declarations of love have no disappeared. Maybe something else can be a safer tradition for couples.

My dad and my brother have also visited Tenerife twice. I really liked those visits. We stayed at the same hotel twice, in the same room. We swam in the pool (there's some embarrassing photos of me and my brother in goggles), went to the beach and built sandcastles, played in the sea. We ate out in restaurants, although I'm not sure how much Spanish food we tried considering we were not even 10 years old, I doubt we would have been that open to trying new foods. Now, though, if I went again, I would be much more open to trying new things. The food at the hotel we stayed at was amazing, though. Every Friday they would have a spectacular cake, normally in the shape of the volcano, Mount Teidi. There was a particular type of pastry, I don't know what, which had an amazing taste and texture. It was like a yum-yum, but 100x nicer. Also, we took the cable car up to the top of the volcano and explored it around there. That was fun, although I got light headed and was sick because of the lowered oxygen levels. That was not as fun. I really do miss it there, it was beautiful.

About 10 years ago my mum, then step-dad and my brother went to a caravan park somewhere. I know it was in England, but I have no idea whereabouts. There was a lake with rowboats, ducks and other families. I made a friend and we were pen-pals for several years until changes of addresses meant we lost touch. That was pretty fun.

Around the same time, we also went to a caravan park in Wales somewhere. It might have been a B&B, I can't remember. We got to milk goats, though and interact with the farm animals that were there. I milked a goat called Daffodil. There was also a got called Snowdrop. I realised goats were one of my favourite animals then.

A few years earlier we had also gone all the way up to the Shetland Islands in Scotland. It rained for 5 days out of 7, and we went out hiking and to the local islands via ferry. That was incredibly windy. Right outside out hotel in the fields were the ponies. We couldn't interact with them, sadly, but it was amazing just to watch them. I remember the room was very large, with elegant but old looking furniture.

I'd love to do more travelling. I want to go to Italy, Canada, America, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Greece and Ireland. Those countries are on the top of my list. My dad has always said that we would visit my uncle in America "when I'm older". He started saying that when I was about 7. I'm now 17, so I'm not sure quite how much older he wants me to get before we do go.
