I do it all the time. When I would hike near the PCT I liked taking a cooler full of soda and candy and leaving it at the trail. I'd come back that night and it would cleared out with some nice notes. If I was day hiking the PCT I'd bring little candy bars. It's like you're handing out gold.
I live in a PCT trail town now and pick up a few hitchhikers a week. And yeah...I have been the recipient on long trips. Food and rides. Sometimes the timing is a little weird hence, I guess, 'trail magic.' I don't see how anyone could slam it. Yeah...there's some spots that got a little crazy but just some one on one help? Gotta' do it. A great vibe and, for backpackers at least, some good mountain mojo that comes back to you.
