He was only an E-7 ,,but he was married to an officer and she worked directly for our executive officer ,2nd in command to one of the busiest Coast Guard stations in the world ...
He had 5 military creases in his shirts ,hit ball cap was even pressed and he had a laugh like santa clause ,,,I hated him ,,,the Chief before him was cool
Beer machines in the hallways ,,the smell of pot smoke filled the halls (these were guys coming home from Vietnam )
Footballs stars ,and prior Service Vets that were shown a lot of lee way ,,,until Chief Calhoun ,a ship is named after his family ,,,He was military in how he slept ,,,I bet at attention
He called me a scum bag piece of gear adrift that was either going to square away ,,,or I would not see my wife again until the end of my enlistment (He had the authority to restrict you to the base )
Soon I was his right hand man ..He had me qualified to run every piece of equipment on the base and a license proving I was qualified ,,,all I had to say was "Chief wants it "

He left to go to check out a ship he wanted to transfer to and never came back ,,,He left me in charge ,,,I was an E-2
For 7 months no one replaced him ,,,I was now the Chief Junior ,,and had the same respect
until one of my gate guards tried to kill me ( it was over his wife leaving him ,,,I just happened to be someone that set him off that day ,,I was replaced with another chief and sent to search and rescue ,,,where men E-5 and E-6's had to work for me when they first checked in
They hated me for being a Chief Calhoun Clone
I cleaned a lot of bilge's ,and got all the shitty jobs
But months later when inspectors from Washington came to drill us on efficiency ,,they asked for the best crewmen
Those E-5's and E-6's handed me their tool box's ,,their life jackets ,their bag of charts ,,and said "Make us Proud "
I got 4.0 ,,the best you can get
Chief made me a Coastie ,,,they made me into a sailor
I got to be Coxswain at 17 ,,that means officer in charge at sea ,,,I ran the boat ,,,I earned that position
