I have an annoying habit I've been trying to break

Maybe not hard enough though.
When I go buy things, I buy them in pairs. I cant seem to buy just one. Sometimes in Threes, but most commonly in twos.
I don't know why I do this.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
That would come in handy in one of the stores here because everything costs less if you buy it in pair.

I do this as well (but not always). Kind of depends on what it is. In some cases, if I need one at some point I'm going to need another. So it saves me a trip into town (I live in the country). Or is a two-pack is a better buy than a single item. Again, if it will store/keep and it's something I use I'll get multiple.
@WindTherapy I don't live in the country or I could at least tell myself thats what it is.
You know, I think it is cost related. If it is a good price I will buy two in case it becomes as expensive as I thought it would be in my head? Because if its something expensive, I don't do this, unless I really really want it and then...*sigh*
Maybe Im worried I wont be able to afford it the next time.
Which is silly she it comes to things like cans of things, or shoes.

It comes from my subconscious where I have an obsession on boobs and ass.
😜
Jokes apart, it's a minor bad habit - don't worry much about it and please don't beat yourself up. Laugh and take it with humour.

That can be a good thing but if it means you have to throw away the second one then that's a bit of a waste. I'll buy two or more of things if it's on special offer or, in the case of hair dye, for example, I may not find my favourite shade next time I'm due to dye my hair.

Have you thought of speaking to someone about the motivation behind this behaviour?
@Fluffybull I have and was told that it likely a fear of missing out on ....something. I can see how this might be it because some things are hard to find again, but most things are not. I just wish I would stop. I do it without even thinking it through.

@nonsensiclesnail Have you thought of seeing a hypnotherapist? That can be very helpful in gaining insight on why you do things and breaking the compulsion.
@Fluffybull I've toyed with the idea of hypnotherapy other other reasons, mostly curiosity. I may look into it again.

Pairs gloves, pairs of jeans and pairs of knickers - that makes perfect sense! 🤣
Allelse · 36-40, M
So you want to buy one car but end up buying two?
@Allelse not yet….
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
Do you do that with clothes? I do that when I go out need to buy work clothing

@HumanEarth Its because the marketing overlords know you want it.

Ebay is an interesting platform. I used to use it more, but I got burned back in the day and have held a grudge against it since. still, I did just buy a water ionizer there. Im really excited to get it. And I did get jsut one, but if it works well I do have plans in the back of my mind to get another, which I wont, but its a little promise I need to make myself sometimes.

Did you fall in love with a brand and a style? Then they stop making that style. Then you find out, your like combing the Internet looking for deals on whats going to be hard to find.

Like I love Kan Kan Bell Bottom Jeans and Nicole Miller of New York

I think for a lot of us overbuying is deeply rooted in a fear of loss.

Might this be the case for you? If it is then some counselling is likely to help and you'd be wise to deal with it before it turns into full blown hoarding.
popmol · 22-25, M
well at least it will take a bit before you run out!

for me its something i want to stop but i can't or not trying enough its finger biting, it started at nails until i started at my flesh too !
Fear of running out? 🤔
@OlderSometimesWiser Im trying to have less stuff in my house. I have too much compared to what I use and places to put it. and Im sure the money could be better spent elsewhere.

When my youngest daughter was little she would say something outlaid once and then whisper it to herself two more times. and I thought, what a funny rabbit! and then one day I realized that when I say something I repeat it in my head two more times. I do the same thing she does only, differently. I wonder if it is somehow related? Which is... a stretch maybe.
It has been suggested that it is because Im a people pleaser and that I'm worried that I wont have enough and I don't want to disappoint someone. Which sounds plausible to me, but it doesn't quite fit as I am the only one who wears my deodorant , uses my hair products and moisturizers, wears my clothes...and so on.
@nonsensiclesnail Sounds like a little OCD thrown in there. It’s a coping and soothing mechanism. Again, if it’s bothering you, you might want to set some little challenges for yourself, like consciously buying only one item when you’d rather buy two. Or going through your stuff and giving a few things away to Goodwill. Baby steps, a little at a time, to chip away at the problem.
@OlderSometimesWiser Thank you. And yes, you may be correct. I am trying. I just came home from the store before I wrote all this and I think I'm just beating myself up because I see myself doing it again.

Smart if you’re buying shoes, socks, or gloves.
NudasPriest · 46-50, M
Just be careful if you're buying a car or a house.
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
I stock up on some things that I use. Mainly key ingredients. Also I collect hardware items and different greases or whatever. often I need to keep something in my van which seems too far off. 😅
@lumberjackslam Thats not a bad thing, but I think I take the stocking up too far. ..or not far enough 🤔. I've not gone into hoarder mode yet. Just annoying amounts of stuff.
