Probably something like Ghost town by The Specials.
Or Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel.
The first because it sums up the negative era we found ourselves in as teens.
The second because it suggests hitting all the negativity with something equally negative to at least try and produce something different.

@RenFur That's a good article...it picks up some allusions in the song that I've always missed. McLean himself (I heard him interviewed about it some years go) was not very forthcoming about the 'meaning' of the song, saying something like 'it speaks to our disappointments'. I've got the interview on tape somewhere...

Off topic a bit - I had a brilliant grade 10 English teacher (who later accepted a position at a private school in Toronto) who always asked the most incisive questions about whatever short story we were assigned but he never answered them... it was left up to us to find out on our own ( through life's journey, I suppose) what the heck he was getting at.

Not because everyone had things not in common but not everyone in my generation experienced the same life of the mind.
A few broke ranks. The weasels ran away. Tails tucked in between their behinds to Canada until President Jimmy Welcome back Kottah said never mind come home we forgive but good luck forgiving yourself.
Others crawled and climbed through the mud to get back home a whiter shade of slime answered prayers for a little more time.
The sponsors were snorting lines wined and dined negotiating our mia behind dmz lines, Nixon Agnew Ohio, college dinks with the usual whine.
Becoming detached finding work to stop the thoughts that remind at the daily grind. This was probably one of the favorites.
