Two years ago CNN released a photo taken by the photographer Anil Prabhakar in the forest in Indonesia. The image shows an orangutan, currently under threat of extinction, while stretching out his hand to help a geologist who fell into a mud pool during his search. When the photographer uploaded the photo, he wrote this as a caption: “In a time when the concept of humanity dies, animals lead us to the principles of humanity.”
It is true. Humanity has still a lot to learn from the animal kingdom and not simply misuse those animals that are unfortunate to have trusted humans at the cost of their lives just so that some can get rich at the cost of their lives.
It is a lesson of humility that everyone should see.
Very few animals kill for pleasure. Those that kill do it because of their instinct of protection or survival, not because of greed and profit like humans.
The picture conveys so much, and I really like how the photographer captioned it. It brings to mind a common theme of biologist and primatologist Frans de Waal, who I admired and just learned has recently died. He and Jane Goodall, who have shown the undeniable intelligence and range of emotions, compassion and empathy that non-human animals possess.
