Football (Soccer)

I love it, but also hate it in equal measures.

The highs, more regularly the lows, but regardless of which, the passion it provides cannot be found anywhere else for me.

The greatest sport in the world; my opinion granted, but no one will convince me otherwise.

For anyone that cares, Leeds United are my team, hence the regular lows! Without these though, we would never truly appreciate the moments of high that will live in the memories forever.

I started learning the rules when my kids started playing. It's still relatively new for us in the US.

My daughter was recruited to play college soccer, and she was a starter all four years.

I travelled to nearly every single home or on-the-road game, probably missed 1 or 2 games total.

She graduates in a few weeks. I had to be asked to take it down a notch during a few games.

@Northwest Ted Lasso has done well I'm America because it's a parody of how Americans used to see the game. And Americans get the joke. It also parodies British culture well

Indeed. The pain makes the pleasure actually matter.

Fans of the superclubs will never understand but success only really really matters after you've stuck with the team through thick and thin.

In 1987 Burnley had to win its last game to stay in the football league. They had been terrible all reason and were last placed in the fourth division and home against a Leyton Orient team who were challenging for the playoffs. The game was do or die because the club was also in a financial mess. As founder members of the football league, the football tradition means a great deal to the town of my birth.

The Leyton Orient players were used to playing in front of 4,000 in placid atmospheres. For this game, 20,000 people turned up and made it a raucous atmosphere. The Orient players were intimidated (as was the ref). Burnley won 2-1 and stayed in the football league.

So. Years later to be in the Premiership, this really matters.

@Burnley123 100% agree. I like Burnley, a proper, honest, working mans club. Like they all should be. The EPL is purely about the money, which is why clubs strive to be there, however to me, the further down the ladder you go, the more real it becomes, and more enjoyable in many ways.
i like the sport very much as well. i'm a fan of the whitecaps of the mls. although our league aint nothing like epl, bundes league, etc itis better than a few other leagues across the pond....our league gets better every year...hence guys like messi playing over here. i'm going to a match this saturday as i am a season ticket holder

@beermeplease Yeah, the MLS is a strong second level league and it's improving all the time. In thirty years it's gone from literally nothing to be probably one of the top twenty competitions in the world.

@DS1980😆for your tales of woe there is a good possibility if ipswich lose there last game you get the automatic promotion place too the premier league .😆 if you want to pity anyone there is poor ned and nimby they follow manchester united lol
DS1980 · 41-45, M
@smiler2012 Sadly, Ipswich won't lose their last game and we enter the dreaded playoffs.

However, as was pointed out to me earlier, winning promotion to the Premier League is like winning a ticket to board the Titanic 🤣

I love Leeds. Premier or below, it doesn't matter. The fans make it a family and we are in it together.

Manchester United 🤣🤣🤣

@DS1980 yes that is what harsh reality sheffield united have found this season unless like the big clubs who have big money backers being promoted from the championship it is like being a christian in a den of lions but do not be disheartened bournmouth and brentford have mmanged too survive so far
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
I am a Bolton Wanderers fan I know how third place feels.

Leeds are my second team from the days of Billy Bremner and his team mates.
DS1980 · 41-45, M
@MrAverage1965 I very much hoped you would overhaul Derby. Playoffs to look forward to *cough* like us 🤣
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@DS1980 I am not sure the owners have the finances to mount a strong campaign in the Championship. So maybe they are happier just missing out..
I know in the UK, American soccer is called football. But is there a sport in the UK called soccer? This question has actually been bugging me. 😒
@DS1980 But is there another sport in England that’s called soccer?
DS1980 · 41-45, M
@OlderSometimesWiser No, just football
@DS1980 Okay, thanks! I can sleep peacefully tonight. 😴
newstu · 61-69, M
I'd rather watch two guys fish.
DS1980 · 41-45, M
@newstu Like I said, opinions. Respect yours but with football, you get it or you don't. Like many things in life I guess.
