US drug control agency will (finally) move to reclassify marijuana in a historic shift

Finally there's some movement to address a total farce. Yeah. Weed should have been a Schedule 1 drug, right next to heroin, for decades. Especially given that meth and fentanyl are Schedule 2 "less dangerous" drugs. Guess the evil weed is losing some of its evil.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

The DEA’s proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use.

The agency’s move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect.

Now it’s just the whole musical chairs of which states will legalise it and which will condemn it from a pulpit.
@WintaTheAngle I think we can all predict which states will do what...

@LordShadowfire Ironically, MS, TX, LA and FL are in the Top Ten of states with the most alcoholics per capita.

My opinion is that it was classified as such due to racism - a legal basis for incarcerating a large number of black and brown people. Thoughts?
@trollslayer It's more like racism was used as a way of pushing for the ban.

A large part of the problem was that DuPont oil did not have a really good way of competing with hemp. They had created a petroleum-based substance called nylon, which they were promoting the hell out of. But everything that was made out of nylon was inferior to similar products made of hemp. So, what's a rich oil tycoon to do?

@trollslayer I was taught, (in my 10th grade history class,) that it was the gov't that introduced marijuana into black neighborhoods and ghettos.
This was done because at the time 1/3 of the Us population was black and 1/3 were Jews. The gov't felt that if the blacks and Jews ever decided to team up, they could actually overthrow the gov't.
So the gov't introduced it to the black folks with the hopes that it would keep them calm and have no interest in overthrowing the gov't.
Unfortunately, the gov't plan failed because marijuana found its way into the young, white, college crowd where its popularity spread like wildfire.
Another failed gov't plan.
Gee, speaking of failed gov't plans I wonder if Biden had anything to do with it...LOL

@LordShadowfire DuPont was also developing synthetic paints for the auto industry which potentially could have had competition from paints containing Hemp oil. And then there was Hearst who had invested in several thousand acres of timber and didn't want the competition from hemp based paper. And Rockefeller (Standard Oil) who didn't want to compete with bio fuels made from Hemp(Ford was already experimenting with this).
I'm glad that leadership has FINALLY seen sense on this issue!

@LordShadowfire Right? When you think about how many lives have been destroyed over a little weed it's appalling. Full, national legalization isn't there yet but that's way overdue too.
