Anyone get treatment for diabetic neuropathy?

Any new treatments? My sister has severe neuropathy in her feet and she is in agony. It is just awful. She is trying to get a surgery for it to restore nerves, but the hospital may not take her insurance. Anything that worked for you?

They gave me gabapentin for mine. I cannot tell if it helps, and was eventually told "take as needed." So I stopped entirely. The list of side effects bothered me and I sometimes wondered if I had those, too.

I was referred to a neurologist long ago, but am not sure if it was due to a CAT scan that detected tiny strokes, or my neuropathy. I should see one but have been so focused on other maladies. One thing at a time.

I was told getting my sugars under control would help. I am and it seems to be helping.

This month I see an eye doctor for diabetic retinopathy. Blood vessels there get leaky due to high sugars, and the eye cannot clear some things which build up. Or something like that.

I then see my gastroenterologist to check if his therapy is working. I had a colonoscopy last year due to a positive Cologuard test. There was no cancer, just inflammation. I was put on pills, and three months later they tested my blood for certain antibodies.

Then the doc wanted me to take the same medicine rectally as well. So much fun! 馃檮 These enemas sometimes feel like they are working, but they cause dehydration and burning at times, and the only remedy is to drink a lot of water, and sit on the toilet and empty things out my other end. But the treatment ends soon. I visit end of the month to be anal probed again.

again it may sound clich茅s but she needs to see endocrinologist in person not online suggestions, I also belive that you are taking her to doctors but if treatment isn't working now then you guys to change the Dr as well

@darkknightt Actually the doctors are not helping her. They say almost nothing about neuropathy and sent her away. We are trying any forum and/or any person we can to see what other types of treatment there may be out there. We are reading some in a book on neuropathy, but now the treatment she may need (surgery) , is at a hospital where they don't take her insurance. So waiting on that. She is on medical forums too.

@Coralmist have you talked to Dr why they are not saying anything about her neuropathy

@darkknightt They try to rush her out, and provide no real tips. It is really a bit depressing what she has gone through. She is trying all the time to find a new Doctor, while feeling awful. :(
I know nothing about it.

There is a guy in my office that has had the weight loss surgery and takes pills that reduce his appetite.

But also supposedly has nerve damage in his hands which he says is carpal tunnel, and needs surgery on them but I wondered if it might be something else too.

@Coralmist I saw this on Facebook this morning and thought of your sister. It鈥檚 worth a listen. It鈥檚 about poor blood circulation being the cause of neuropathy
