how come the Templars couldn't defeat the muslim saracens in the holy land

during the middle ages? ultimately the templars quest failed and they couldn't recapture the holy land from the saracens and saladin.

If you are surrounded, supplies don't often reach you. New troops can't get through to replace those who are killed...and the money dried up. For a short time, they did capture Jerusalem.
