Cyclists will now be held accountable for fatalities analogous to motorists.

This applies to bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters and dangerous cycling that causes death may now incur up to 14 years imprisonment; proposed by the HC.

The amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill, creates three new offences: causing death by dangerous cycling; causing serious injury (aka GBH) by dangerous cycling and causing death by careless/inconsiderate (aka reckless) cycling - FFS the words mean the same!

Inconceivably, it has took this long to propose the changes in the law to cyclists that recklessly disregard others; further development by regular servicing, insurance and some form of tracking/identification will most likely be enforced in the not too distant future. As it now stands, cyclists will be required to check their 'vehicle is legally equipped and maintained'.

Insurance? What a pain in the posterior.

In Denver, bicycles are supposed to be on the sidewalk and scooters in the street because bicycles don't have a motor and scooters do. I don't know how many times I have almost been hit by both on a sidewalk.

@Nihiless A few. This is a car town. Very few people walk or bike.

@Nihiless we loads of cycles lanes including separate ones on our seafront for cyclists riding in both directions, yet we still get them riding on pedestrain only areas
@Dez580 That's typical - it should be prohibited if they have sufficient lanes to use.

Just another sub-section of society our broke government can try and illicit money from via on the spot fines.

Coming shortly...they'll be insisting cyclists have insurance. And once again, stop checks will enable whoever's supposed to enforce this nonsense to issue on the spot fines for non-compliance.

I am fed up with all the just eat and similar cyclists cycling without any lights when it is dark , gives the rest of us a bad name
@Dez580 It should be mandatory on all adult bicycles.
Do these crimes really need to be added?

@MistyCee we had these laws I remember growing up, in our local paper it was often reported in the 1960s of cyclists riding without lights or in a dangerous manner, being fined by the courts but things changed.
@Dez580 I'm just not sure why they need to be bicycle specific, I guess.
Dez580 · 61-69, M
@MistyCee it was a loopohole in the law following people being killed by reckless cyclists who would only face short prison sentences for killing a pedestrian

those ebikes / escooters are dangerous and should be regulated like other motor vehicles. curious to know the injuries / fatalities of ebike vs regular bike riders. they race on bike lanes full speed making aggressively muscling regular bike riders out of the way - its dangerous!
@tenente I believe the reason is because of the maximum speeds neither do I think it will be too long before they will be regulated. Currently, e-bikes/scooters and bicycles cannot be identified - therefore they may get away with it.
