I had to send my summer youth temp home today 😞
Jackson was doing so much better since the last time I had to get on his case earlier this week. But today, he went and let himself be distracted by his political crap again. Twice! The first time, I had told him to sort out a few totes of mail while Bryanna and I went and made our rounds. We were gone for about 40 minutes and when we came back, he barely did anything because he got caught up watching and reading political BS on his phone! I told him straight up I wasn't impressed.
But then, he went and screwed up badly. We had an outgoing overnight for FedEx that he was aware of, but missed when FedEx came and went because he was watching the news. Now that priority package has to sit in the office all weekend and won't go out until Monday, all because he wasn't keeping track when he was supposed to. Completely unaccpetable! That was the final straw. I told him I have to send him home. He begged me not to, but he's made too many mistakes and his mind clearly isn't here today anyhow. I really hated to do it, but I had to.
I talked with Jackson a bit before his parents came and picked him up. I empathized with him, telling him about how when I first started working here, I made my fair share of bad mistakes as well. I hoped to show him that although he has to call it a week early, there aren't any hard feelings and I hope to see him back on Monday. That will be up to him though. He seemed to be okay as can be. Disappointed, but he was hearing me out and even shook my hand before he left with his parents. I really do hope he'll come back next week.
I had a really bad feeling this was gonna happen today. The first thing he did this morning was go on about that Donald Trump FBI raid stuff. I wasn't really paying attention, but I had my concerns that he might not be too focused today. Guess my concerns were well-founded. It still blows my mind how a kid like Jackson can be so invested in politics at his age (16). He should be focused on chasing girls, sports or playing video games... Religiously following politics?! Not just that, but so much that it is distracting him from doing his job...
I really didn't want to have to do that, damn it. I feel awful about it! But at the same time, he's been talked to about this several times since he's started working here last week. I just can't abide by it any longer! I can only hope he will finally learn this time to stay focused while working. This probably sounds mean, but I'm not so sure he will now. All I can do is hope. He was doing a lot better since I last talked to him Tuesday. Maybe today was just an off day for him. We'll see if I'll have a chance to find out if he comes back next week.
