Car question

I’m looking to buy a second hand car and the car I’ve found has done 155,000 miles, It’s petrol and has 1 years mot on it.
I’ve always been told that over 100,000 miles on a second hand car is never a good choice.
Any advice would be appreciated.

What make is it? Some cars are more long-lived than others.

A program car, a lease or a rental is generally pretty well maintained. You didn’t mention the make but Toyotas and Nissans hold up pretty well. I’d expect a well maintained Toyota or Nissan to last until 250,000 perhaps

I think a lot has to do with the model, the year and how it was driven. If you're getting a killer price on it, which opens up a little cash for any necessary repairs, cars can be solid well past 150K.

If it's a Volvo or Mercedes it should be good. I don't know how good the modern cars are but both my Volvos were still going strong when I sold them at around 300 thousand miles.

Modern cars are in fact generally much more reliable than cars were 30 or 40 years ago.

It depends on the price and the make/model. As long as it is a model that was, or still is, popular so that spare parts are cheap and plentiful mileage is much less important than it used to be. Just don't buy anything high performance or unusual.

There's a reason why these new auto repair insurance companies refuse to insure any car beyond 150,000 miles.

It's because beyond that they always have repair problems no matter what the manufacturer is. That 150,000 miles is a absolute maximum milage for them.

So at 155,000 miles expect some very expensive repairs.
it depends on the former owner, what year it is,if the oil was changed,, never been in a flood waters,,what state did it come from,,if salt was used on the roads,,look under the car to see if it is rust on the frame,,

I think short journeys are supposed to be worse than a big total mileage. What was it used for?

depends on make, model, year, previous owner, where it came from, how it was maintained, etc.

@swirlie I've never driven a junker in my life, and you are obviously quite shallow
